Meet Ian Winfield
- West Midlands Inspirational Tutor of the Year
We are proud to share that Dudley ACL tutor Ian Winfield has won the first ever award from the West Midlands Combined Authority for Inspirational Tutor of the Year.
The award recognises adult learning and training providers who have gone above and beyond to make a positive difference in adult learning. This involves creating an engaging method of teaching, producing an exciting atmosphere to learn in or helping people overcome barriers so they can go on to succeed.
Ian has been deaf since birth and has worked as a tutor in the adult learning team for over 10 years. He communicates and teaches using sign language.
As a tutor, Ian has taught Deaf Awareness and British Sign Language to many residents and businesses in the borough. He has a very engaging and innovative teaching style alongside an infectious personality which motivates and enthuses our learners. Ian has a passion for equality and believes that everyone, with or without a disability, can achieve what they aspire to.
Ian also teaches digital and computer skills using sign language to adults who are deaf to gain skills for further education and employment.
British Sign Language (BSL)
Our BSL course will enable you to ask basic questions using sign language and even learn how to fingerspell. These popular courses will also prepare you to progress to a qualification course in BSL if you require this.

It is estimated there are 12 million people in the UK with a hearing loss - that’s almost one in six. Our Deaf Awareness and BSL courses will enable you to develop skills to communicate with deaf people.
